When can mentoring be useful?

Mentoring can provide an effective support structure in a range of settings. For example:

In the community:

to support young people who are at risk of disaffection or exclusion from society;
to support homeless people or people in supported housing in accessing the right support, information and offering them someone to talk to;
to address the concerns of pre-release prisoners and ex-offenders and assist their social re-integration.

In schools and other educational institutions:

to raise pupil's achievement and self confidence;
to develop personal and social skills of pupils;
to support pupils in the transition from primary to secondary;
to provide guidance and support for new teachers;
to develop the management and business skills of head teachers.

In business:

to support staff personal development in line with human resource strategies;
to provide an additional level of support for new staff;
to develop skills and confidence to aid self employment and business development;
to support young people wishing to set up their own business.
