Mentor training

It is recommended that mentors should attend at least one days training. If mentors are mentoring under 18's, child protection training is compulsory. Who will do the training? How do you know they are aware of good practice in mentoring? Do you need more than one trainer - you may spread the training out depending on the expertise available. Will you offer accredited training? Your training should include:

Aim of mentoring project
Definition(s) of mentoring
Stages of mentoring
Benefits of mentoring for mentee and mentor
Communication skills
Setting goals and targets
Boundaries - i.e. when mentoring occurs, duration of relationship, where it occurs and any guidelines (e.g. room criteria - busy area, staff near by, etc) that you may have, sharing of contact details, confidentiality and reporting procedures
Recording progress - you may have session sheets/log/target sheet, etc that you require mentors or mentees to complete
Issues that mentees may face
Specific training on child protection or vulnerable adults if relevant
