Mentoring offers a holistic approach to the needs of the mentee.
For example, one objective of a school mentoring project may be to improve academic performance in its mentees. However, a mentor offers more than tutoring.
A mentor may offer guidance in academic work but also listens to the young person's thoughts and feelings about subjects, exams, revision, attitudes towards teachers and peers, pressures and influences, practical concerns about being on time, not handing in homeworks, etc. Setting small realistic targets can encourage the mentee to improve in a range of areas that can ultimately affect their attitudes towards and performance in, their education.
