Using the facilitated journey method
Study the scenario below and decide which mentor demonstrates the 'facilitated journey':
SCENARIO:
A mentee comes to a brick wall (problem/challenge) and feels they can't get over it.
Mentor One
The mentor wants to be a really good mentor so feels it is her/his responsibility to help their mentee get over the brick wall.
- The mentor offers the mentee a helping hand.
- The mentor pushes and shoves the mentee up the wall until the mentee has grabbed the top.
- The mentor runs around to the other side of the wall, jumps up and grabs the mentee's hand and pulls them over the wall.
- The mentee falls down and lands on a heap in front of the mentor.
Mentor Two
The mentor wants to be a really good mentor and would like to help support and encourage the mentee to overcome the challenge of getting over the wall.
- The mentor discusses why the mentee feels the wall is a challenge they can not get over. The mentee tells the mentor that s/he would like to be able to get over the wall.
- The mentor encourages the mentee to have a go.
- The mentor offers the mentee a helping hand up.
- The mentor guides the mentee to where s/he can find a suitable crack in the wall to put his/her hands and feet.
- The mentee misses and falls off the wall.
- The mentor praises the mentee for attempting the challenge.
- The mentor encourages the mentee to discuss how it felt to tackle the challenge and what s/he could do better the next time.
- The mentor encourages the mentee to have another go.
- Eventually, after several attempts and developing his/her climbing skills, the mentee is able to get to the top on his/her own.
- The mentee struggles to come down the other side and slips but the mentor is at the bottom to catch and praise him/her.
