Developing a Mentoring Programme

When planning a mentoring project ... have you thought about the following?

Staff availability

Project aims and objectives

Mentor and mentee selection criteria

Realistic project targets

Mentor role description and person specification

Volunteer policy

Registration / application form

Referral form

Recruitment and selection procedures

Mentor interview / informal chat

Mentee informal chat

Rejection

Matching procedures

Mentor training

Induction programme

Trial period

Support and supervision

Ending the relationship

Evaluation

So now that you have thought about all of that ...

Publicity materials for the recruitment of mentors and mentees that outline role, commitment and benefits. Remember to sell what you have to offer potential mentors- 'We need Mentors' is not a catchy heading! For example, they will gain new skills, meet new people, get out-of-pocket expenses, receive free training, have regular support etc.

A more detailed list of questions is contained in the application form and guidance notes for the Approved Provider Standard - copies available to download free from mandbf.org.uk. Contact Fiona at the Volunteer Development Agency if interested in going for the Approved Provider Standard.
