What does the certificate cover?

The Certificate is available at both Level 1 and Level 2.  To gain the full award, volunteers must complete four units covering preparing to volunteer, self management, good practice standards and understanding needs, issues and responses in their own organisation.  These units can also be completed and accredited individually, making it ideal for the volunteer who needs some flexibility in their training.  The full programme is delivered over 10 x 3 hour sessions, but volunteers need to spend some additional time on assessment activities.  A basic synopsis of the 4 units is provided below:

Preparing to Volunteer

This unit is about the volunteer showing what they wish to offer and gain through volunteering and agreeing their responsibilities and preparing their role through undertaking induction and ongoing support.  It includes looking at the benefit of volunteering to the volunteer, organisation and community.  It also looks at what the volunteer should expect from the volunteer involving organisation, as well as the responsibilities that are placed on the volunteer.

Skills for Self-Management

This unit is about the volunteer's ability to manage him/herself in order to develop skills and meet voluntary commitments.  It includes issues such as communication, assessing own support and development needs, time and stress management.

Working to Good Practice Standards

This unit is concerned with the volunteer's ability to work, taking into account health and safety, equal opportunities and the organisation's key policies and practices.  These policies and practices will differ according to a volunteer's role and organisation.  For example, a volunteer support work may show how a confidentiality policy has been observed, while an environmental volunteer may show how a health and safety policy has been observed when using a particular piece of equipment.

Understanding Needs, Issues and Responses

This unit is about the volunteer's understanding of the needs or issues that his/her volunteering is concerned with and how different organisations respond to those needs and issues.  It will look at how the skills developed in the volunteer role relate to the volunteer's personal or career plans.
