In 2003 the Volunteer Development Agency launched the results of a major piece of research entitled Committee Matters - an assessment of the characteristics, training needs and governance role of voluntary management committees in Northern Ireland. The information collected through the research enables the Agency and other networks, support agencies and funding bodies to ensure that management committees have access to appropriate support services. This major piece of work is the first of its kind for Northern Ireland and has provided a great opportunity for management committee members to have a say in how they would like to be supported in the future.
A total of 558 organisation questionnaires were returned and 1,094 individual management committee questionnaires, giving a strong representation of the sector in Northern Ireland. A 6-page summary report of Committee Matters highlighting some of the key findings is available in paper copy or can be downloaded. A scoping paper is also available, giving a literature review of research carried out into voluntary management committees.
