This year International Volunteer Day coincided with the third annual lecture in tribute to the late Professor Jimmy Kearney OBE. The series of lectures were organised to recognise the significant professional and personal contribution Professor Kearney made to the voluntary and community sector in Northern Ireland.

The Volunteer Development Agency organised the event in partnership with NICVA; the Voluntary and Community Unit, DSD; Big Lottery Fund and the Centre for Voluntary Action Studies, University of Ulster. Minister for Social Development, Margaret Ritchie hosted the event at Parliament Buildings.

Speaker at the event was Liz Burns CMG OBE President of the International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE) and her lecture was entitled 'Citizenship and Volunteering: Shifting Concepts, Enduring Connections.'
