Volunteers' Week

Star

Volunteers' Week is a national campaign, promoted and co-ordinated in Northern Ireland by the Volunteer Development Agency. It is an annual celebration of volunteering which runs from 1 - 7 June each year. We work with our sister organisations in Scotland, Wales and England to ensure the Week has a national profile but lots of local interest.

International Volunteer Day (IVD) is celebrated around the world on 5 December. IVD offers an opportunity for volunteer organisations and individual volunteers to make visible their contributions - at local, national and international levels - to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

Over the years, rallies, parades, community volunteering projects, environmental awareness, free medical care and advocacy campaigns have all featured prominently on IVD across the world.

Student Volunteering Week takes place from 22-28 February 2010. The Week gives organisations the opportunity to recognise the contributions made by students across Northern Ireland to the lives of individuals, their community or the environment.

Individuals aged between 16-24 years are among those most likely to volunteer and this age group are most likely to volunteer with organisations involved in sport or exercise. This presents a real challenge to the stereotypical image of students and young people.

Volunteering can help students develop skills and experience and is a great addition to their CV. Volunteering can also help students engage with new communities if they are living away from home.
