About the organisation
The aim of the Ulster Quaker Service Committee is to contribute in a practical way to the understanding and reduction of both causes and results of violence, suffering and social malaise. This leads to the establishment of projects which support those vulnerable people in our society.

Opportunities available
There are volunteering opportunities at Quaker Cottage for a period of six weeks (mid July - end August) and also long term 1 or 2 year posts.

About the work
Short term volunteers assist permanent staff by helping to run a programme of activities for children from both communities who attend one day per week. This includes group games, arts and crafts, trips out as well as preparing food and cleaning the centre.

Long term volunteers work with small groups of children (5 - 11 years) from both communities from inner city areas. A variety of co-operative games, arts and crafts etc. are used to encourage the children's self development, promote self esteem and improve mutual understanding. Volunteers also work with very young children (1 - 4 years) and must be willing to help with cooking and cleaning.

Experience and skills required
Volunteers must have experience in working with groups of children in either a formal or informal setting. They should also preferably have experience working with others in a team work situation. Arts and crafts, painting, juggling, music, drama, group games or similar skills would be useful. For long term volunteering, a driving licence valid in the UK with two years driving experience would be advantageous.

Other requirements
Fluency in English and good health are necessary, as is a willingness to serve, a genuine concern for others and a non-judgmental approach. Short-term applicants must be at least 18. The minimum age for long term volunteers is 21.

Application details
Completed applications can be received at any time from January to May for short term opportunities. Interviews for long term volunteers are held at various times during the year.

Conditions of service
Volunteers must be willing to attend a training session prior to work commencing.
