About the organisation
NICHS is a charitable organisation which exists to improve community relations in Northern Ireland by working with young people. Our programmes are designed, through the provision of opportunities for long-term contact, to promote reconciliation and mutual understanding between young people and their communities. NICHS work enables young people to develop their confidence, self-esteem and skills. NICHS motivates young people to take responsibility to explore alternatives to prejudice through raising awareness of cultural identity, political difference, justice and equality.
Opportunities available
There are a number of different roles and opportunities for volunteers to participate in ranging from day/evening activities and sessions to residentials (mostly weekends but sometimes longer). Most of our work takes place in Belfast.
About the work
Volunteers will be involved in helping with residentials for young people and evening work. This work includes programme planning, supervising groups of young people, leading group work sessions and minibus driving.
Experience and skills required
Volunteers need to be at least 18 years old to work on the NICHS project. While youth work experience is welcomed it is not totally necessary and everyone new to the organisation must attend an induction session, as well as compulsory training. Prospective volunteers who have skills like first aid, life saving, drama, music, arts and crafts, games or sports are always in demand as NICHS takes great care to form a balanced volunteer team with a wide range of skills and experiences.
Other requirements
Energy, commitment, enthusiasm and a sense of humour are also required.
