About the organisation
Harmony Community Trust (HCT) aims to promote and encourage mutual tolerance and understanding among people of all ages, with particular reference to society in Northern Ireland. HCT provides social and educational opportunities for cross-community groups of children, young people and adults through a year round programme of residential and non-residential activities, including a schools programme and work with young people with special educational needs.

Opportunities available
Volunteer opportunities exist at Glebe House: weekends and mid-week periods in autumn, winter and spring; residential periods (twelve days at a time) in school holidays (Christmas, Easter and summer); long term opportunities for periods of between three months and two years.

About the work
Volunteers help to run all the schemes and other activities including games, crafts, songs, camping, catering, cleaning and work with animals etc. Long term volunteers run and maintain the Glebe centre. Duties involve cleaning, catering, looking after the animals, organising programmes for visiting groups and assisting short term volunteers.

Experience and skills required
No experience or skills are required but it helps to have an interest in working with children and young people, a good standard of English, common sense, a sense of humour, an ability to get on with others and work as part of a team and a willingness to work, on occasion, long and unsocial hours.

Other requirements
It would also be helpful to have some knowledge of arts and crafts, games, outdoor activities, animals, gardening and the countryside.

Application details
Age 18+ preferred, although some 17+ will be accepted for the short term volunteer programme. Long term volunteers should be 21+. Drivers over 25 years, with a clean driving licence, are particularly needed. All applicants must fill in an application form, provide two references and go through a police records check. Applications can be made any time, but preferably in February, April or October.

Conditions of service
All volunteers receive board and lodging and some travelling costs within Northern Ireland may be covered. A trial period is in operation for long term volunteers.
