JOINT  VOLUNTEERING STRATEGY AND ACTION PLAN FOR NORTHERN IRELAND LAUNCHED - 15 March 2012

Today the Department for Social Development that has responsibility for volunteering published a joint Strategy and Action Plan document that will be used to steer the development and promotion of volunteering across Northern Ireland. The Volunteering Strategy itself has been in the public domain since May 2011. Volunteer Now welcomes the launch of the Strategy and Action Plan as we feel it is a great endorsement for volunteering and creates an opportunity for volunteering to thrive and maximise the impact that it can have on individuals, organisations and communities.

UPDATE ON VOLUNTEERING STRATEGY FOR NORTHERN IRELAND- 8 MARCH 2012

On the 8th March the Committee for Social Development met with Department for Social Development Officials to discuss the formal launch of the Volunteering Strategy for NI and accompanying Action Plan. As this Strategy is the main policy driver for the future of volunteering over the next 5 years, if not longer, Volunteer Now staff sat in the public gallery to listen to the briefing.

The Volunteering Strategy has been in the public domain since May 2011 but has yet to be formally launched. The Action Plan has not been published. At the committee meeting Department Officials did not give a launch date but it is expected that this will happen very soon.

At the committee meeting, Department officials also talked about the introduction of a new Volunteering Innovation Fund which would offer specific funding to groups working within the areas such as Sports, Faith or the Environment.

THE VOLUNTEERING STRATEGY FOR NORTHERN IRELAND- JUNE 2011

The Volunteering Strategy for Northern Ireland was agreed by the Northern Ireland Executive at its meeting on 30 June. A formal launch of the Strategy will take place in the near future. Work has also begun on the development of an Action Plan which will deliver the key priorities and associated objectives outlined in the Volunteering Strategy over the coming years (see below).

Volunteer Now welcomes the Executive's approval of the first Volunteering Strategy for Northern Ireland and looks forward to future developments.

The Department for Social Development has asked for suggestions for the Strategy's Action Plan which it hopes to publish later this year.

Volunteer Now has drafted a Volunteer Strategy Action Plan document for submission following consultation with members.  We have submited it to the Department and are awaiting the outcome of the process.
