Jennifer Greene has been employed as a Volunteer Manager with Ballymena Family and Addicts Support Group since July 2006.
Her job involves putting policies and procedures in place, recording volunteers` hours and travel and expenses, sourcing training needs for volunteers` development, ongoing one-to-one support, sustaining the number of volunteers and where possible increasing volunteer opportunities.
As one of the founder members of the organisation, Jennifer worked on a voluntary basis for six years, which gave her great experience and knowledge of what it is like to be a volunteer and as a result is able to emphasise with her volunteers. During this time Jennifer was able to avail of several training courses, which are still relevant for her today.
Describing herself as a people person, Jennifer says, “What I enjoy most about my job as a Volunteer Manager is seeing a volunteer, lacking in self confidence and self esteem maybe because they have been unemployed for sometime, develop and become confident because someone has given them a chance for self development. I really enjoy my job and would encourage others to follow this career path.”
One of the Jennifer’s main challenges is to increase the number of volunteers from the Ethnic Minority Communities, along with the paperwork which she dislikes!
To celebrate International Volunteer Manager Appreciation Day on 1 November Jennifer actually volunteered herself - she delivered Hopi Ear Candling to family members to help alleviate the symptoms of stress and anxiety.
